Worship leader: Dave Dailey Speaker: David Royes, Senior Pastor Scripture: Proverbs 18:13 Title: Wise Speech and the Power of God If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame. Notes: Main point: The interplay of speaking and listening is a mark of spiritual maturity. 1. Introduction A. A scenic detour to see wonder B. A single verse to savor C. Poetry with parallel lines to ponder 2. The priority of hearing A. The word "hear" B. Believers in the One True God are people of the Word C. Humble and curious listeners 3. A temptation when speaking A. Hasty speech B. Haste leads to disgrace 4. A window into the heart A. Innate folly B. We are ruled by affections and assumptions 5. The wisdom of our God A. A path forward for sanctified speech B. The message of the cross Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:5-7) I tell you, on the day of judgement people will give account for every careless word they speak. (Matthew 12:36) For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
