Join us for worship! Join us for Worship! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIaszn0rNq4 7/5/26 Sunday Service from Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, PA. Worship Leader: John Sletta Speaker: Mark Estes Scripture: Ecclesiastes 7:2-4 Title: A Pocketful of Paradoxes It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. Notes: 1. Ecclesiastes = a commentary on Genesis 3 A. Description of life in a broken world B. Without a right view of God, life is vanity C. Ecclesiastes = one big paradox i. The seemingly negative message drives us to Christ D. Chapter 7 = a pocketful of paradoxes 2. We learn a lot about life by thinking about death A. Matthew Henry: "It will do us more good to go to a funeral than a festival." i. Doesn't mean parties are bad 1. Banqueting table = picture of divine blessing ii. But having fun doesn't have a profound impact iii. In contrast, funerals force us to examine our lives B. Our culture reacts to death with fear, resignation, and contempt C. Funerals help us consider: i. Brevity of life (Psalm 90) ii. Final evaluation of our lives (2 Cor 5:10, Matt 5:36-37, Ecc 12:14) D. Mourners will be comforted i. Suffering purifies us ii. Thus, sorrow is better than laughter 3. Thinking about death helps us prepare to die A. Too many people are not prepared to die B. A good way to prepare is to grieve with those who are grieving i. These experiences change us ii. Only Christians can genuinely cry and smile at the same time 4. Ecclesiastes offers divine wisdom A. Jesus took His own advice i. He went to the house of mourning (John 11) ii. Why did Jesus weep? B. Lazarus' resurrection = an appetizer i. Jesus stopped funerals, but not His own ii. Ultimate paradox = paradox of the cross 5. Applications A. Go to funerals B.
