10/4/26 Worship Service & Sermon: Trustworthy Words for Empty Talk - Titus 1:9-16

Join us for Worship! 10/4/26 Sunday Service from Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, PA. Worship Leader: Luke Stoltzfus Speaker: Dave Royes Title: Trustworthy Words for Empty Talk Text: Titus 1:9-16 Outline: 1. The Disruptive Influence of False Teachers 2. The Important Work of Spiritual Leaders 3. The True Cleansing for Christ Followers He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work. Notes: Main point: The measure of the church is the message that we cherish 1. Introduction A. An amazing garden left unattended B. Main point 2. The disruptive influence of false teachers A. They are unhinged from authority B. They question sufficiency C. Their message has no efficacy 3. The important work of spiritual leaders A. Godly leaders silence false teachers B. Godly leaders rebuke their church 4. The true cleansing for Christ followers 5. Application "Any question about Christian living that begins with 'so what must I do' and then ends with 'and now is that enough'? is born of a legalistic approach to life. Legalism dilutes godliness from whole life commitment to a part-time project." --Tim Chester "One of the most important things any pastor or elder will do for you is something you may never notice. It is not visiting the sick, or successfully leading a church to expand its budget or building, or ensuring that his sermons and Sunday School classes and Bible studies have clear outlines--all of which are good things. One of the most important things is this: working hard to know Scripture in order to protect you from false teachings, which are useless, of no benefit, dangerous, and divisive in the church." --Mark Dever "When false teaching increases we multiply the number of true teachers." --John Stott #falseteachers #spiritualleaders #Christfollowers #bricklanecommunitychurch #bricklanechurch #elverson #pennsylvania #worship #sermon #Titus To connect with Brick Lane, visit our website at: https://www.brick52.org/ For more biblical teaching, you can also listen to audio sermons at: https://www.brick52.org/audio-sermons
